Retaining Staff – The Importance Of Your WORDS

Words are the building blocks of our existence and they reflect the integrity of the person who speaks them. Words hold power so it’s important to speak words that hold positive intentions and always be prepared to keep your word to others, as they’re a reflection of your intentions and integrity.

In business, it’s important to use your words effectively.  When someone is performing well – let them know.  When you’ve done something wrong… own up.  Ask people about their thoughts on things.  Be polite, please and thank you still go a long way today.  And be inclusive… It’s not all about you… it takes a team to get things done.  And there is no ‘I’ in TEAM..

One of the things I’ve often heard in Exit interviews is people saying ‘I bought the vision –  I wanted to join a great company’.  Many times people leave because of the leader – their boss.  So here’s a few ideas as a business owner and a boss on how to retain staff with how you show up every day and your communication.

When you are running your business – some of these key words / phrases … are phrases of vulnerability and leadership … but they can become one of your great strengths…

Leaders don’t often admit when they made a mistake…

6. I ADMIT I made a mistake ‘in that I didn’t train you in the right way’

‘I should have listened to what you had to say’

5. You did a great job Everybody loves to be thanked for their efforts.  Wouldn’t it be great for staff to be leaving each week feeling valued and appreciated for the work they have done

4. What is your opinion If you want to build a collaborative business where people make a contribution…. You have to give people the opportunity to give their opinion…

We often push people’s opinions aside in order to feel like we are in control.  But it’s important to harness the energy that other people have

3. Treat people with respect ‘could you please’ ….  Rather than ‘do that’ .

It makes such a difference when we soften the language and show respect to our co-workers

2. Thank you Particularly when someone has gone out of their way – stayed back late – done something outside their normal responsibilities… just to get the team fired up – and to get things done

1. WE – start to use WE It shows it’s not just you that drives everything. In fact it’s a community / team effort.

If you can start to use this language you’ll start to be a much more spirited leader …. Leading through the quality of your language…
